1.     What is paint anyway?  Paint is a group of pigments that are emulsified and suspended into a liquid.

 

2.     When was paint invented?  It was first seen 30,000 years ago in cave dwellings intended to communicate graphically and decorate primitive homes.

 

3.     When did paint become popular?  In 1700, Thomas Child established the first paint mill in America in Boston MA.  In 1867, D.R. Averill from Ohio patented the first ready-mix paint that we know today.

 

4.     How much do we use? We spend @ 20.9 billion dollars annually in total sales of paint annually, based in 2006.

 

5.     What about lead paint?  Paint containing lead, started to be restricted in the 1950’s; a voluntary removal of lead in paint was done by the paint industry.  The official ban was made in 1978 by the Consumer Product and Safety Commission.  As a professional painting contractor, we want you to know there are brochures available from this group or the NCPA www.paint.org, which are available to homeowners online to help determine if they have lead based paint in their homes and what they can do about it.
